East London: The Sustainable Culture Guide

With Stylist Ina Lekiewicz

East London is the cultural hub of the city boasting vibrant cafes, independent shops, and laid-back bars. Read on to discover Ina's exclusive guide to the East's sustainable gems.

Rochelle Canteen

We head to Rochelle Canteen, the first stop in our latest sustainable city guide, this time to our favourite places around REV’s home in East London. Rochelle Canteen was started by Margot Henderson of St. John Bread and Wine, and is housed in a converted school bike shed. The minimal furniture is mainly vintage and the food is as locally-sourced and simple as possible. Stylist Ina Lekiewicz was our guide for this tour, here with her thoughts on the Canteen.

“It is rather astonishing how soothingly quiet and green this place is. Located just 2 minutes from busy Shoreditch High Street in the garden of an old Victorian school, Rochelle Canteen is the perfect eatery for either breakfast or lunch. Beware! The place is really well hidden – you have to ring a buzzer at the school gates.” – Ina

Tiosk

Tiosk is a small eatery based on Broadway Market that specialises in ethically sourced and unusual teas from around the world. They take time to make sure that all of the tea that they serve comes from merchants that are part of the Ethical Tea Partnership. Alongside cups of exotic teas, you can also find wholesome meals with an emphasis on vegan options. They have also pledged to try and minimise their impact on the environment wherever possible, with a focus on both recyclability and biodegradability.

“I’m a really heavy coffee drinker, but I’d switch to tea if I could get tea like this everywhere. Particularly worth trying are the tea-lattes with ginger, spices and, optionally, almond milk – plus the really healthy gluten and dairy-free lunch meals. I wish this place was closer to where I live!” -Ina

Nude Espresso

Nude Espresso is a perfect stop-off for a strong cup of coffee here in East London. They pride themselves on the quality of their sourcing, roasting and brewing processes, and they have strong relationships with all of their partners. They only buy green and organic coffee and roast everything in-house here in their coffee shop on Hanbury Street, E1. They pay pay high prices to farmers that produce quality coffee and all of their coffees are all environmentally, socially, economically and ethically sustainable.

“Nude Espresso is one of my favourite places to work at and it’s a great place to meet people. It has the most amazing and enormous windows – which means lots of light. It’s located in the heart of Shoreditch, but the place never seems too busy or too loud. And the coffee is just astonishingly good – sourced directly from farmers.” -Ina

Conservatory Archives

This is one of our favourite local and independent shops. It is an oasis of green on bustling Hackney Road, and somewhere you can find a variety of oxygenating plants to add to your studio or home. Located in a converted ironmongers, and with an emphasis on locally sourced, and well-grown plants, we think this makes a great pitstop for some added greenery and a sense of zen here in London.

“This is definitely the most beautiful and trendiest plant shop in the whole of East London. Conservatory Archives has a breath-taking selection of plants, vintage pots and antiques. Plus it is certainly the best place to find those perfect plants for Instagram photos.” -Ina

Sager & Wilde

Sager & Wilde is located on Hackney Road and boasts an extensive list of natural and bio-dynamic wines. It is what they have become particularly well known for, serving up a variety of lesser known, independent wine labels, promoting some of Europe’s best small vineyards. The wine bar itself is simple and minimalistic and an excellent place to drop in after work for a glass of something unique and terroir.

“With its seasonal menu and amazing organic wines, this is a perfect place to meet friends after a busy day.” -Ina
