“The earth is the most beautiful thing I can think of. It’s what literally gives us life. And if it is sustaining us, we have to sustain it, especially for our children.”

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Spend time alone with my two daughters, husband and a coffee.

What’s your daily beauty routine?

I wish I had the patience to do more. I use a rosewater spray my sister, Claire, gave me called Tammy Fender Bulgarian Rose Water and a Golden Hour face cream by Ursa Major. I also love the lip butter by Vertly.

How would you describe your day to day style?

Comfort is most important to me. I love working in the garden too, so I can’t be too precious about what I put on. I wear jeans mostly by Slvrlake or Levi’s and a white t-shirt.

What is your favourite flower for this beautiful Spring season?

 Lily of the valley.

For anyone wanting to get more in touch with nature at this time do you have any easy tips for amateur gardeners and landscapers?

All you need is a bit of a sunny windowsill, regular watering (put it on your phone reminders app), buy some seeds, organic potting soil and a pot. Take the time to do some research about the best way to plant whatever you’re into! There are infinite YouTube tutorials and online resources like Gardenista to help you start your garden (however small or big) at home.

How do you inform yourself throughout the day?

More than anything, social media is so important for me right now to feel connected especially since I am away from NYC where I feel is the pulse of everything. In addition, I listen to The Daily podcast, get the NY Times Briefing, and check in on the WSJ.

How do you incorporate a sustainable routine with your young children?

I have to say they keep me on the routine with wake up times, naps and feedings so instilled in their little bodies. A routine is one of the most important things for a child to feel safe in their development.

Do you have any personal life hacks for getting through the day in the most sustainable way possible?

I try to keep our home entirely free of single use plastic, it’s becoming harder with the girls (diaper packaging, shampoo bottles, etc.) and I have found myself writing frequently to businesses both big and small to reconsider their packaging and manufacturing choices. I also drive an electric car and of course bring my own reusable canvas shopping bags wherever we go. Homemade meals are essential with small children so that’s of course a must. I try to think of the little things too, like clothing shopping—buying used or vintage wherever possible and sharing and exchanging hand-me-down clothing and toys with friends and family. Also, try your hardest to shop local and from earth conscious companies. I know everyone says it but, it really makes a difference.

How do you wind down at the end of the day?

I always have dinner seated at the table with my husband. I think it is so important for our routine especially as we are home – sometimes we eat lunches at the desk and breakfast standing so if we can get one proper meal time in it must be dinner!

What does dinner time look like for you?

We have had my parents and sister’s family come stay with us in Connecticut for some time so that was nice to be all together. It’s always homemade, local ingredients (lot’s of farms around here which I am very grateful for).

What does sustainability mean to you?

I am constantly changing this answer. Today it means the attitude of holding responsibility for the world of tomorrow. I think sustainability must incorporate a respect for the earth in all that you do, from brushing your teeth, how you eat, how you treat others, how you build a home to how you travel.

What drives you to live a sustainable life?

The earth is the most beautiful thing I can think of. It’s what literally gives us life. And if it is sustaining us, we have to sustain it, especially for our children.
