Grey & White Eri Silk Throw

Handwoven using a wild Ethiopian ‘Eri’ silk and cotton blend, this beautifully soft throw is made using a variety of skilled processes. The Eri silk is cultivated in Ethiopia and mixed with cotton. Parts of this thread blend are then dyed using natural pomegranate husks, which give an earthy grey colour. These are then woven together on handlooms to create the throws and hand finished with tassels. As is traditional in Ethiopia, men generally work the looms and these have been made using time-honoured methods. Size is 130cm x 200cm.

What makes this piece special?

The Eri silk caterpillars that are used for this throw eat castor, environmentally friendly plants that grow abundantly all over the country. The silk that is produced has a wonderfully textured and organic look that has come from all natural sources. Made in Ethiopia by Sabahar, which is a certified World Fair Trade Organisation based in Addis. The products are entirely hand made from start to finish – from spinning the cotton and silk thread using a drop spindle to weaving the fabric on traditional wooden looms.
