Heide Lindgren & Impact Garden

Heide Lindgren on her commitment to sustainable fashion.

We speak to model and activist Heide Lindgren about her passion for sustainability and the road that got her there. We also get her take on the upcoming Impact Garden event being hosted in conjunction with the Global Fashion Exchange.

“I became involved with REBUILD Globally about a year and a half ago when I traveled down to Haiti to help teach English with the amazing school, English In Mind. On that trip, I came across REBUILD and absolutely fell in love with their concept. Having always been very involved in charity in one way or another, it was amazing to come across this concept of a social business that REBUILD had put into place in Port Au Prince through the development of Deux Mains Designs. They very much followed the ethos that I heard originally from Simone Cipriani of the Ethical Fashion Initiative: “Not charity. Just work.” The idea that a business could (and should) have some sort of social cause built into it’s fabric was something that resonated with me so much.

I offered up the experience that I’ve had as a model for the past 15 years and helped them add new sandal designs to their to line in order to reach a new audience and increase sales – therefore increasing our ability to hire more people. It’s a point of pride for us to not say that 15%, 25%, or even 50% of our sales go back into the Haitian community…100% of our sales go right back into the community because Deux Mains is not a charity, it is a for-profit Haitian business. It’s really something I believe so much in. That’s why Impact Garden was created. When I met David from Modavanti and Stephanie from the Cordes foundation, we partnered up with the goal of bringing some of the best artisan brands – all with social causes – together to show influencers in the industry just how much of an impact they can make with where they choose to spend their money. Teaming up with Global Fashion Exchange upped the ante even more. Impact Garden has a huge amount of importance in my life and I believe this is something that will be continued and can be applied to so many different causes down the road.”

Impact Garden will take place in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on March 7th, starting at 7pm. Stay tuned for more information to come on our editorial soon.
