REVolution 2: Re-made

REVolution 2: Re-made

Our second REVolution for 2017

Lives can be re-lived and choices can be re-made. For our second REVolution for 2017, we draw attention to designers who are committed to the concept of re-made, meaning they aim to recycle and upcycle materials as often as possible whilst maintaining the integrity of their products. This cuts down on waste and prevents billions of pounds of off-cast materials from ending up in our oceans and landfill.

Teeki

One of our favourite new designers is a major proponent of this: Teeki Activwear makes all of their products from an innovative material that is made from the fibres of recycled plastic water bottles. The material is then cut, printed and hand-sewn in the Teeki factory in California, creating local jobs and cutting down on the carbon footprint of the company. The case for “remade” here is a strong one-billions of plastic water bottles are thrown away each year, with each one taking over 400 years to break down. Ideally we would all stop using plastic water bottles, but in reality it’s a fight that still needs to be fought and Teeki is doing significant good in finding a new purpose for these old bottles.

Swedish Stockings

Swedish Stockings is another designer doing innovative things with recycling. The very first of it’s kind, this eco hosiery line is made from the by-product of other nylon products that are non-biodegradable. This keeps production very simple, and  they also re-use water and re-filter it before it goes back to the earth.  They operate an overall zero-waste policy within their solar-powered factory. They also have their very own recycling programme, which allows customers to return old or damaged pairs of stockings that will be then broken down and made into various other uses. Not a single environmental consideration has been left out of the production process, and the result is some of the most beautiful and long-lasting hosiery we have found, sustainable or otherwise.

As we continue our move towards finding the most ethical designers out there working with recycled and upcycled materials, you can check out our progress in the re-made collection. This includes designs from Christopher Raeburn, who upcycles old military materials in his London studio, as well as The Sway, who re-use discarded leathers in their vegetable tanned biker jackets.
