The Seaweed Craze Diessected

Why is everyone losing their SH*t over algae?

We look into the latest super beauty trend

When you work in an office concerned with all things au naturel, the latest in organic beauty trends is always being considered. But as with everything trend-based in wellness, the discussions about what is actually legitimate gets murky. I.E. turmeric, which we were putting religiously into our tea only to hear from some medical sources it’s nothing more than a bit anti-inflammatory and tasty (jury is still out for us and we are still drinking it in hope it’s off-setting the wine drinking).

And so we hear about seaweed as the newest super ingredient for beauty. It’s interesting because it’s natural, and arguably quite sustainable as a resource which we explore later.

“The ocean’s plants are able to survive extreme conditions and often adapt to changing environments, giving them potent powers to be harnessed for renewing the look of skin.” -Creme de la Mer

Seaweed, when applied to the body, draws excess fluid and waste products from the skin. It also acts as a cleanser for dead skin cells and other impurities on the surface. Seaweed is also rich in iodine, which can help boost thyroid functions. The thyroid gland produces amino acids that absorb iodine, and it also produces a metabolism-regulating chemical in the bloodstream. This metabolism regulator also helps rejuvenate the skin.

To boot, the growing of seaweed is a great thing for the environment. Marine algae is responsible for the production of around 70% of the worlds oxygen, and is the basis for many of the food chains in marine and coastal eco systems. It stops turbulent wave patterns, protects sea animals and slows the process of coastal erosion (to the extent that it can since we are taxing it with climate change).

However, as with all things that suddenly become overly popular, we must be careful of depleting this incredible resource too quickly. Case in point the avocado craze is now responsible for depleting California of it’s already strained water resources. Who knew it required over 72 GALLONS of water to grow just one avocado? Bear in mind that wellness experts tell us to consume as many of these as possible and all of a sudden an incredible amount of water resource and chemicals are being used to harvest as many avocados as humanly possible.

It is imperative to make sure seaweed is being harvested sustainably so we do not use up this fundamental resource of our seas. Furthermore, as the sea itself produces 85% of the oxygen we breath it’s vital to our survival and we must respect it's various components.

This is why we choose our beauty brands carefully, in order to make sure they are not only using natural and organic ingredients but also respecting the collection of those resources. Hence the line we have, Haeckels, which has an emphasis on sustainable, British seaweed. “What we do is real, we are ocean farmers, which comes from a love of our neighbourhood, our natural surroundings but above all a love of the ocean – its imperative to us that ocean health be at the forefront of everything we do from formula to packaging – our clients, collaborators and customers share with us this deep understanding and concern from the ocean for the ocean,” says the Haeckels co-founders. They have one of only two licenses in England to harvest seaweed and with that also comes a claimed responsibility to the nearby natural world on the Margate coast.
