The Benefits of Organic Beauty

We explore the reasons to invest in natural beauty.

They say that true beauty comes from within, but we believe that the deeper importance is in considering what happens to our bodies internally when we apply the products we rely on on a daily basis.

From a young age on, we are surrounded by the notion that we makeup makes us more beautiful through all kinds of media. This makes that the usage of beauty completely integrated in our everyday lives. It has become so intrinsic that we don’t often take a moment to think about what is going into our bodies and the deeper consequences of the chemicals and additives in these products. Our skin is our largest organ and it is deeply absorptive-what we put on it will have an effect on the overall health of our bodies.

Many products a lot of us use daily seem harmless and sometimes even helpful: a stroke of mascara makes us seem more awake and a nicely smelling day cream will make the skin supple and might even slow down its aging process. What could be wrong with that? Apparently quite a few things. A lot of cosmetics use a long list of chemicals. Mascara, lipstick and other cosmetics oftentimes contain ingredients like phthalates, parabens and arsenic. These chemicals can cause things as extreme as dizziness, allergic reactions, nausea, skin irritations, and rashes and can sometimes even lead to reproduction problems and cancer. None of these sound like things we would voluntarily go through, but they are things we risk simply by wearing cosmetics.

When looked at in this light, skincare proves to be and even more problematic bathroom cabinet section. The skin is the human’s largest organ. It absorbs the products, which end up in the bloodstream. Dr. Mercola says to The Telegraph: “Putting chemicals on your skin is actually far worse than ingesting them, because when you eat something the enzymes in your saliva and stomach help break it down and flush it out of your body. When you put these chemicals on your skin, however, it is absorbed straight into your blood stream without filtering of any kind, so there’s no protection against the toxin. The five pounds of toxic chemicals per year you may be absorbing from the use of toiletries and beauty products are largely going directly to your delicate organs.”

Besides hurting your body from the inside, skincare has an almost equally frustrating feature: it oftentimes does not even do what it promises to and sometimes even has the opposite effect. A simple moisturizer often times just clogs the skin’s pores instead of hydrating it. And anti-aging cream might have an immediate visible effect on the skin, but the effect never stays forever. A lot of the ingredients haven’t been scientifically proven to be effective. Peptides, for instance, are small proteins that are supposed to stimulate the growth and repair of cells, however, even though it is used in many anti-aging products, no one is completely certain it actually is able to fight the effects of time.

A way to clean up your beauty bag is to green it up: replace the drugstore products for organic ones. These products contain natural plant-derived ingredients made with plants are that are grown organically – no pesticides and chemicals were used during the growing process. These products use nature and all its natural abilities to create products that are not harmful for the environment and animals while being made and for the skin when used. Do be aware of some brands using smart marketing to get people who want to treat their skins better to buy their products. Words like ‘natural’ don’t mean anything legally. Search the label to be sure the ingredients are made on a field and not in a lab.
