REV's Guide To A Sustainable Holiday Season

As the festive season is nearly upon us, we've updated our Christmas guide to give you some inspiration on how to do December with peace of mind and spirit.

1)  A tree is for life, not just for Christmas!

Head to your local Christmas Forest and find a tree that keeps on giving after the festive season. The Carbon Trust ranks the tree you might fancy by environmental footprint, so embark with the family and an informed mentality. We recommend opting for a pot grown Christmas tree that you can replant in your garden after the festivities, sparing 10% of your annual carbon footprint and saving one emerald beauty from the chop! Or better still, if your house is already overflowing with greenery, give your palms and cacti a Christmas twinkle and donate the money to Trees for the Future to help conserve the world’s forests.

2)  Facing the morning-after turkey sandwiches …

Each year in the UK, 2 million turkeys and 74 million mince pies hit the bins in holiday aftermath. Before meandering the markets, consult the online portion planner to save your wallet the heartbreak and forge ahead for a night of no regrets. Feeling especially savvy, opt for a meat-free Christmas this year…

3) Drinking + Friends – the Glass Waste

What hurts more than the post-Christmas hangover is the 13,350 tonnes of glass thrown away after the holidays echo their last clinks. Recycling your empty bottles equivalates to taking 1,300 cars off the road this year. Celebrate the season of giving with one that does not take away from your valiant efforts throughout the year!

4) Wrap responsibly…

Pretty as it looks, wrapping paper is arguably one of the most wasteful parts of Christmas. Roughly 3,000 tonnes of it is used every year – that’s enough to cover Big Ben almost 260,000 times!  Just picture the amount of trees! Plus, the majority of it goes straight into landfill! This year, consider swapping out the glossy sheets for recyclable brown paper, which will look just as elegant under your tree. You can even customise your parcels using any left-over string, ribbon or tags you have lying around.  Zero waste at its finest! If you’d prefer some jaunty motifs, Wrappily has you covered with its 100% recyclable, compostable paper printed with soya inks, available in a wide range of colours and patterns.
