Sustainable Small Businesses We’re Supporting in Los Angeles
We at REV are always advocates of supporting local, however we believe now with the financial devastation caused a as a result of the global pandemic, choosing to buy from small businesses has never been more important. In this guide, our Content Manager Taylor talks us through some of her favourite sustainable spots in her hometown of Los Angeles.
Flamingo Estate
Set in the hills behind Los Angeles, Flamingo Estate is a breathtaking property that houses events, makes natural products, and now is teaming up with a local farm to bring LA produce boxes. Collaborating with the organic farm, Country Line Harvest, Flamingo Estate offers pick-up and delivery for these organic farm boxes. There are different size boxes, depending on your family size, and they rotate produce weekly depending on what looks best on the farm! Flamingo Estate is also offering fresh and wild roses by Roseland farms so that you can have a little bit of nature inside.
Lady & Larder
Located in Culver City, Lady & Larder is owned and run by twin sisters who are passionate about seasonal and sustainable cuisine. They are offering a unique delivery and pick up service, Lady Bodega, that has wonderful premade food along with specialty cheeses, cured meats, produce essentials, fresh bread, and cupboard goods. Better yet, grab their Schaner Farm produce box along with some premade salads to make eating at home a little easier.
The Farmer's Market
LA farmer’s markets are still open all over the city and now is an amazing time to support local farmers. Most supermarkets have pretty empty shelves most of the time or have long queues, while farmers’ markets are well stocked! Our favorite is the Santa Monica Market as it has one of the biggest selections of organic produce. Check out this guide to local markets to see where your closest market is.
Orto
Located in Santa Monica, Orto Restaurant offers incredible organic and seasonal Italian food for takeout and delivery. Their pasta is some of the best outside of Italy. It is so important to support local restaurants right now as they are really suffering, so if you can order in a few nights a week, please do! They also have some amazing organic wines, and they are offering 25% off their wine list – hard to resist.
Milo and Olive
Another west side favorite of ours, Milo and Olive is a wonderful neighborhood bakery and pizzeria, that uses local ingredients by farmers who grow as sustainably and organically as possible. They are offering takeout and delivery of their reduced menu and DIY cooking kits so you can make your own pizzas and pasta at home – wonderful activity to do with your family!
Surya Spa
Usually a natural Ayurvedic spa located in Brentwood, Surya is now offering a spa menu that you can pick up or get delivered to you at home. Inspired by the idea that food heals, their menu includes Ayurvedic comfort foods – all organic of course. Grab some of their amazing fruit loafs, organic teas, and homemade kitchari. You can also grab their gorgeous beauty products and tinctures for a spa day at home.
Tilda California Natural Wines
Celebrate natural Californian wines with Tilda in Echo Park. They are offering contactless takeaway of wines, wonderful pastry goods, sandwiches, and fresh produce. They are also on the delivery app caviar, so you can get your wine essentials delivered to you! Simply ring them up or have a look at the shop from behind the glass and they will leave your bag just outside the door.
Kensho
Located in Hollywood, Kensho is usually a Japanese restaurant and natural wine bar. Now they are offering pick-up and delivery of their incredible natural wines, pantry goods, and meal kits. Every Tuesday they are doing a pizza kit pick-up so that you can make your own. We highly recommend going for their three-pack of wine deal, because let’s be honest, the more wine the better.
Bulk Shops
We love independent bulk shops, as you can buy your pantry goods or cleaning products with less plastic involved and you save on frequent trips. The Refillery LA is a mobile refill station that offers a delivery service for all their products, meaning your sustainable goods can come to you! Simply head to their site and request a visit and they deliver your goods without contact.
If you’re well and able to head out of the house, check out Rainbow Acres Natural Foods in Venice. They have an amazing bulk selection, organic produce, and also have a great sandwich and juice bar. If you are on the east side, Cookbook has two locations, one in Echo Park and one in Hyland Park. They have an amazing organic selection, specializing in bulk goods and local produce.
