Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin

You’ve probably heard of Ina May Gaskin before, as she is one of the most famous home birth midwives in the US. Her book spiritual midwifery was first published in 1976 and introduced an entire generation of young women to the possibility of home birth and breast feeding. The book really breathed new life into the all-but-vanished- field of midwifery. Many additions later, her book is still incredibly educational and a wonderful resource to read about positive birth stories. Something I’ve found incredibly encouraging through my pregnancy.

The First Forty Days by Amely Greeven, Heng Ou, and Marisa Belger

While I loved reading this book, this is a resource I’ve really passed to my husband to take notes on. The first forty days after birth in many cultures is the time for the new mother to rest and bond with her baby. This book walks you through the art of caring for the woman during this time of recovery. The book includes 60 simple and delicious recipes for healing soups, replenishing snacks, and calming and lactation boosting drinks – all formulated to support the new needs of the mother and her body.

Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth is an international bestseller for a reason. Drawing on over 40 years of experience, May shares inspiring real life and positive stories of birth that she herself has witnessed. She also walks the reader through what truly happens during labour and the wonderful capabilities of the female body. I found this book incredibly useful because it is so educational and informative. Her tips for creating a comfortable environment for birth and how to maximize your chances of having a joyful birthing experience are things every pregnant woman should read!
