Natural Beauties with BASIUM Founder, Constanze Saemann
To help celebrate the launch of natural skin and fragrance line BASIUM on our site, we chatted with founder Constanze Saemann all about the creation of the line and the organic hero ingredients used. Constanze shares with us how she navigates a sustainable lifestyle and her natural beauty rituals.
“I try to commit to an all around organic lifestyle. There is no difference between what you put inside of your body or on to it.”
What led you to create BASIUM?
I started studying aromatherapy and natural perfumery around 4 years ago when I was living in New York City. At the time I was living in a fast-paced world and I needed to focus on something that grounded me and brought me joy. I had always been hand blending my own beauty products so it was a very natural progression to move in this direction and that was how the idea of BASIUM was born.
Can you talk a bit about why it was important for you to use organic ingredients?
I try to commit to an all around organic lifestyle when it comes to other parts in my life, so using organic ingredients for BASIUM came naturally. There is no difference between what you put inside of your body or onto it in my opinion.
What are some of your daily rituals using BASIUM?
The days have been getting colder as we are transitioning into winter so I have begun using my Beau perfume oil. The warming and grounding scent makes it easier to start the day when it’s still dark in the morning.
Also, one of my favourite winter rituals is to make myself a cup of herbal tea and put my Terra face mask on because of it’s key ingredient, turmeric, gives my skin a healthy glow and makes me feel fresh again. Even on a grey Berlin day!
How are you de-stressing during these uncertain times?
Switching off my phone whenever I can and getting out of the city to reconnect with nature when I am able to. As well as reminding myself that better times will come.
Have you always been sustainably minded in the way you live your life, or is this something that has evolved for you?
Sustainability has always played an important role for me. However, due to my job as a model I had to take a lot of planes over the past years without really considering the environment too much.
It’s been almost one year without taking a flight and my plan is to always offset my flights from now on as soon as I get back to work on another continent.
Besides making the switch to BASIUM, what are your top tips for a sustainable beauty routine?
Don’t buy too many products – instead, stick to a couple of good quality ones. Also, support small businesses instead of big commercially produced products.
Who are your beauty icons?
I don’t have someone specific in mind but I always admire women that just shine from within without any makeup on.
Finally, what does sustainability mean to you?
Consuming less, reusing things, and considering the environment.
