Our Favourite Eco Friendly Hotels in Portugal
As things begin to open up again, we are so excited to be looking at exploring other cultures and how we can begin to travel again in the most conscious way possible. We know the carbon footprint of travel is very large, and so when we decide to take a trip we at REV are now looking at making sure we choose destinations that are as sustainable as they are beautiful – hotels that are honouring the local community and environment in order to provide a better sense of eco tourism. As we in the UK are allowed to now go to Portugal safely we wanted to start with our favourite ethical hotels there. See below some stunning hotels to consider for your next holiday to this wonderful country!
Ecotourism is now defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education. Education is meant to be inclusive of both staff and guests.”
The International Ecotourism Society
Quinta De Comporta
“There is such beauty in simply acknowledging what makes a place special. For Comporta, it’s the perfect balance between Nature and the local lifestyle that makes it the unique place it is. Quinta da Comporta isn’t about changing that, it’s about respecting and honouring that connection so its legacy lasts in time.” – Founder, Miguel Câncio Martin. This hotel is a stunning space to stay in that honours every part of the local community and environment.
Silent Living
This small, sustainably minded hotel group has several different places to stay within Portugal and all of them seem to be just as stunning as the other. From a delicate and minimal hotel in the heart of Lisbon to the perfect countryside cabins, every small detail at Silent Living has been thought of with the environment in mind and our need to reconnect to the simpler things in life that can bring us true joy. With Silent Living hotels, less really is more.
Areias do Seixo
This hotel has sustainability at its core – it was dreamt up with the idea that the hotel itself would have the least environmental impact possible and with all amenities being green and local. They use farm to table principles, with their own gardens (you can grow your own whilst there!) and also reuse rain water. Solar panels and geothermal are also in place. This stunning spot is as eco as it is beautiful.
“The environment is where we all meet; where all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.”
Lady Bird Johnson
L’and Vinyard
L’and Vinyard is a spa based hotel that is as good for your health as the health of the planet. The spa itself uses all natural grape based products that are locally cultivated, and organic farming practices are in place for both the food and beauty items you can experience whilst there. Interior decoration features pieces made in Alentejo by local craftsmen. There is a great sense of pride and respect for the surrounding lands, and the hotel encourages you to embrace nature whilst there.
São Lourenço do Barrocal
São Lourenço do Barrocal is a hotel that has committed itself to the beauty of upcycling with its architecture and a commitment towards the local landscape, flora and fauna, the local community, its history and connection to the land and the local economy and small businesses, fostering a type of tourism concerned in respecting and experiencing all the authenticity the area has to offer. They operate a farm to table food ideology as well.
Sublime Comporta
The owners of Sublime Comporta, Gonçalo Pessoa and Patrícia Trigo, believe that investing in a sustainable and socially responsible manner, strongly contributes to the region’s local economy, to its longevity, to the story it has to tell and strengthens the luxury tourism offer increasing the awareness of Comporta and Portugal as a whole. They have their own organic gardens to supply produce and a one of a kind bio pool where water is treated solely with aquatic plants, excluding the use of chemicals. This space is a true living ecosystem deepening Sublime Comporta’s sustainable attitude.
