24 Hours In Santa Barbara: Our Sustainable City Guide
Santa Barbara may be my favourite place in California, maybe even in the whole of the US. The town is full of gorgeous white buildings with colorful tiles, beautiful restaurants, and stunning beaches. If you’re planning an escape from Los Angeles, or heading to California for a road trip, explore my favourite sustainable spots in Santa Barbara.

Breakfast - Backyard Bowls
When in sunny Southern California, it is essential to get the cliché smoothie bowl for breakfast. My favourite acai bowl is from Backyard Bowls as they use organic and locally sourced produce. Their entire menu is plant based and designed to have a small footprint! Plus, their coffee is delicious…
Lunch - Satellite
When on holiday, lunch should come with a glass of natural chilled wine. Satellite is my go-to for lunch, because they are focused on conscious, quality farming and fresh local ingredients – both for produce and wine. They have an incredible list of natural, organic, and biodynamic wines available by the glass. You can also grab a few bottles from their wine shop to have back at your hotel or by the beach!
Wine Tasting - Au Bon Climat
If you have time, going on a tour of some of the local vineyards is a wonderful thing to do. However, if you are only spending one day in Santa Barbara, there are some amazing tasting rooms in downtown. My all-time favourite winery, Au Bon Climat, has a lovely little tasting room that is a must visit. ABC wines are all natural and the man behind the wines, Jim Clendenen, was one of the pioneers for natural winemaking in California. Truly some of the best wines you’ll ever try…
Dinner - Bettina
Prepare to eat the best pizza out of Italy. Bettina serves up naturally leavened breads, and pizzas alongside beautiful Italian dishes inspired by the local farmers market. They are 100% transparent about where they get all of their ingredients and produce from, so you know exactly what you are eating. You can really taste the quality of the organic and local ingredients. They also have a wonderful wine list, full of low intervention wines!
For The Night - El Capitan Canyon
Ditch the conventional hotel for a night, and head to El Capitan Canyon. You’ll drive deep into a canyon, where you’ll find beautiful cabins and yurts under the stars, far away from light pollution. They don’t actually let you drive straight to your cabin, as they are a “car free canyon,” to ensure all the wildlife in the area are protected and their guests are far away from fumes. Just take one of their complimentary bicycles for quick journeys throughout the canyon. The hotel has water conservation, recycling, and renewable energy in place to ensure they are as sustainable as possible. Grab a bottle of organic local wine from their canyon shop and sit under the stars!
