Organic vegetable gardening for beginners.

We have explored a lot around this topic of growing your own food, and have put together some extra resources for inspiration on actual steps of how to begin a garden from scratch. Our co-founder Cora Hilts walks us through how she started a no till garden at her home in Maine, inspired by her podcast conversation with the amazing Charles Dowding.

3 Tips to Start Organic Vegetable Gardening

We know there is a lot of noise around gardening, so we wanted to present you with three simple pieces of advice we love when it comes to starting your own natural vegetable garden.

1. Grow what you love to eat!

It’s easy to become overwhelmed with how many amazing veggie seeds and seedlings are out there in the world, but if you aren’t going to love eating them there is no point growing them! By being selective when you are first starting out, it will be easier to focus on growing a few quality vegetables. Once you have grown a vegetable you are able to harvest yourself and eat immediately, we promise there will be no going back from the satisfaction or taste!

2. Foster Biodiversity!

We know that nature loves diversity – it’s why you never see just one type of flower in a meadow or tree in a forest. It’s the same way in a garden. Organic vegetable gardening is more successful when you incorporate things like herbs and flowers that attract pollinators and deter pests. Our favorite flowers to go alongside vegetables? Calendula, borage, nasturtium and chamomile!

3. Organic Vegetable Garden Fertilizer

We know a lot of people are looking for maximum output with all the input that goes into growing an organic vegetable garden, and fertilizers can be a huge topic of conversation here. Oftentimes we find that you don’t even need a fertilizer if you focus on building soil health through things like planting cover crops and creating amazing at home compost you can use within your vegetable garden. But if you are looking for a really good organic fertilizer to buy, we think Coast of Maine does some of the best!

Also, if you are wanting to create amazingly nutritious compost, the Mill Food Recycler is our go to for home use!
