REV On Air: Plastic Free Solutions in Seaweed With Julia Marsh, Co-Founder of Sway
Today we are incredibly excited to bring you a conversation with Co-founder of Sway, Julia Marsh! Sway create innovative seaweed alternatives to plastic that aim to combat climate change by involving nature in every step of the creative process. Plastic typically has no regard for its consequences to nature, and recycling as a second thought solution is encouraged by big oil as a smoke screen that allows them to continue operating as they are, manufacturing and using pollutive materials. This is why we love the work of Sway and why this episode is so impactful – we hope it can inspire you to be innovative in whatever field of work you’re in too!

“Seaweed is the most regenerative food stock, period. It subsists on nothing but healthy ocean water and sunlight, it eats carbon for lunch, it grows at a rate 20-30x faster than corn or sugarcane, it doesn’t need fresh water, it doesn’t need pesticides, it just grows in the ocean…so this is a really compelling input, all you would have to do is figure out how to turn it into a replacement for plastic.”

About Sway:
Sway harnesses the power of seaweed to create home compostable replacements for plastic. Seaweed is the foundation of all Sway products, which mimic the compelling qualities of plastic without the downsides. Utilizing the natural polymers abundant in seaweed (agar, alginate, and carrageenan), they are able to optimize and scale the solutions nature has already given us. While traditional plastics contribute to climate change at every step of their toxic existence, Sway materials are made with process in mind.
Sway sources responsibly cultivated, ocean-farmed seaweed grown in harmony with the ocean. They use a diverse set of red and brown seaweeds from around the world as the base of their packaging technology. Sway works exclusively with suppliers who provide dignified employment to farmers, meaning fair wages and good treatment. They are hard at work to support and help scale up suppliers for whom impact is the number one priority, such as supporting the transition to climate-resilient coastal economies with lobster fishermen in Maine, Indigenous communities in Brazil and Chile, and tourism-reliant communities in the Caribbean.
“The most impact happens when those same machines that are super optimised and already established are actually running seaweed instead of petroleum based plastics.”
