Meet The Lost Explorer – Our Favorite Regenerative Mezcal and Tequila Brand
Meet The Lost Explorer. Our new favorite spirit brand founded by our friend David de Rothschild. We had the pleasure of interviewing him for our first ever REV On Air Podcast episode a few years back. Since then, it’s been exciting to see their rise in popularity. Particularly amongst our audience! Find out what sets them apart in our deep dive below.
What Make The Lost Explorer So Special
Mezcal is a smoky agave spirit with rich flavors. It has won over many spirit lovers and those seeking new tastes. Moreover, have you heard of sustainably grown agave? Of which is giving back to the community and the soil. The Lost Explorer is making one of the most consciously made spirits on the market.
Beyond crafting an exceptional drink, The Lost Explorer is beyond sustainable. They commit to regeneration and giving back to the community. This won them awards, like The World’s Most Awarded Mezcal, in their launch year, 2021. They are actively investing back into the local Oaxacan community. Where their plants are grown, and their spirits are made and bottled.
The Lost Explorer recognizes that everything is connected. They believe in a web of social and environmental responsibility. By working with local groups, they help tackle climate change. Gender equality and empowering women in Oaxaca’s Indigenous communities are also a big focus. They provide fair job opportunities. And share ancestral knowledge and skills that help promote sustainability.

How Their Mezcal Is Produced
On ancestral Miztec land in Valles Centrales, Oaxaca, The Lost Explorer grows agaves for 8 to 12 years. Helping the plants reach their ripest maturity. Care is taken for each individual variety, Esparadin, Tobala, and Salmiana, as they differ in sizes. With different particularities that require different attention. They plant a new wild agave for each one they harvest. Avoiding the use of insecticides. The Lost Explorer wants to enrich the land for all species calling it home.
Agave waste turns into fertilizer. This helps nourish the land and supports regeneration and circulation. They are also using 50% recycled crystal scraps to craft their lovely Mexican bottles. The bottle stoppers comprise of natural wood and sealed with fully biodegradable beeswax. The Lost Explorer chose partners based on their strong environmental values and high quality. Support for Mexican businesses is a top priority.
Sip Their Spirits with Curiosity
The Lost Explorer Sipping Ritual –
“To experience mezcal is a journey that begins as soon as you uncork a bottle, but whose tracks have been laid millennia prior. With time as a key ingredient in both craft and consumption of this ancestral libation, mezcal likes to take things slow. Sit with loved ones or with yourself. Turn inward or come out of your shell. Celebrate, contemplate, or just watch an afternoon pass by. Sip Curiously.”
Espadín Mezcal (Agave Angustifolia)
The approachable, welcoming aroma of Espadín will instantly transport you to the arid valleys of San Pablo Huixtepec where our Espadín grows. The sweet smoke rests gently on the roof of your mouth before giving way to a gentle, lingering finish that caresses the mouth in an even warmth.
Tobalá Mezcal (Agave Potatorum)
A cozy aroma of dry tobacco, wood and cocoa gives way to subtle vanilla notes on the palate, ultimately with leather and clay notes being reminiscent of characteristics found in a fine scotch. A smooth and earthy finish carries hints of citrus and fresh spring grass.
Salmiana Mezcal (Agave Salmiana)
On the nose, Salmiana expresses fresh green chili, vibrant grapefruit peel and agave after a rainfall. The citrus notes carry onto the palate with a sweet tint of dried herbs that lead to a spicy finish with even minerality.
Blanco 100% de agave – Tequila!
A smooth agave forward Tequila with subtle notes of minerality. Crafted to be sipped slowly, herbaceous and earthy notes transport you to the sun-soaked lowlands of Amatitán, Jalisco. The slight minerality is a gift from the ancient volcanic terroir, with a faint sea salt finish blown in from the nearby coast. We love to pair The Lost Explorer Blanco with a mild panela cheese, earthy pistachios, or a fresh citrusy ceviche.
