“Dining outside is one of my favourite aspects of summer, and now that we are able to grow most of our own produce in our organic garden, putting together sustainably-minded dinner tables has become extra special! It’s wonderful to reflect the same sort of thoughtful ethos with the pieces I set the table with, which is why I love Obakki so much.” – Cora Hilts

See Cora’s picks for her summer table below!

R+D.LAB Glassware

This glassware is crafted from Swiss borosilicate glass, known for its pure, durable quality. Borosilicate glass is some of the most resilient glass in the world; known for its incredible ability to withstand extreme temperature changes without cracking or scratching due to the low thermal expansion in the chemical structure of the glass.

The pieces are shaped using traditional mouth blowing technique; the innovation of design comes from modern shapes inspired by aesthetics of rationalist and modernist architecture whilst respecting its functionality. The result gives each piece a simple elegance.

These special pieces were crafted in a workshop run by third-generation glassblowers called R+D Lab in Italy; made entirely by artisan hands, each piece is unique and has been created with the greatest care and attention to detail. If handled with care, they will last a lifetime.

Cora’s Picks:

Luisa Calice 3-Piece Set

Clear Luisa Coppa – Set of 2

La Chicharra Ceramica Plates

La Chicharra Ceramica is also a favourite dinnerware of exclusive resorts such as The Tulum Treehouse, a private jungle retreat in Mexico owned by Design Hotels Portfolio. And a favourite at the trend-setting West Hollywood mezcaleria (mezcal bar), Madre!, where these stunning plates, bowls, and cups are described as taking the establishment’s Mexican food “to the next level”.

Cora’s Picks:

8″ Plato Liso – Set of 4

11″ Plato Liso – Set of 4

The Lost Explorer Mezcal

In the mezcaleria theme, Cora served Lost Explorer Mezcal as her cocktails of the evening. Created by David Mayer de Rothschild, Lost Explorer Mezcal is one of the most sustainable liquor brands out there. They have the long-term mission of becoming the most sustainable mezcal brand in the world – and they are so transparent about all the incredible things they are doing so far.

While setting high standards for sustainability within the industry, they are creating incredible mezcals. So far, they have three award-winning artisanal mezcals with different notes depending on your preference. They also make incredible gifts because you can even personalize your bottle by engraving your loved one’s name! Their Tobala Mezcal is our head of partnership’s favourite as it is earthy with hints of tobacco, cocoa, vanilla and leather and it offers a unique balance between wood aromas and umami flavors.

Swim - Kōraru

Hopefully you are going somewhere warm and tropical and can pack a selection of swimsuits. Kōraru makes some of our favourite swimsuits – they are chic, comfortable, supportive, and ethically made. All of their pieces are made of ECONYL® regenerated yarn from nylon waste, and their packaging materials are created with a range of new recyclable materials, each with its own amazing story. The Rifu Triangle top paired with the Side Tie Bottoms is a must take as it is the perfect classic bikini. It is doubled for sheer protection and is completely adjustable with the ties. For a one piece option, look no further than Koraru’s Chikyu Belted One-Piece. It has wonderful full coverage in the front and a sexy low-cut back. It has wide straps, which were designed to stay up – even when swimming or on the go. Pair the one piece with some shorts, pants, or a skirt and you have a beautiful outfit for dinner.

Below is our Co-Founder, Cora wearing Kōraru swimwear for her Sustainable Guide to Hudson, NY! – also a perfect honeymoon location!

Lingerie - Understatement Underwear

Lingerie for a honeymoon is obviously essential. Understatement Underwear make some of the comfiest and sexiest bras and underwear on the market. Created in 2017, with the desire to turn an everyday necessity into a statement piece from under to boost the confidence of all women. All their pieces are made completely responsibly – both socially and environmentally. We would pick their Lace Triangle Bralette 001 in Blanche to pair with their Lace Cheeky bottoms in Blanche – the set is so comfortable, light, yet supportive! Another favourite bra of ours is the Lace Bralette Top in the color Mrs. Grey to wear with the Lace Cheeky in the matching color. You can also mix and match the colors to create a different look!

A good sunscreen is a must pack for any holiday. The handcrafted portable sun-stick is formulated with sun-harmonizing botanicals along with zinc oxide – our favourite sunblock. It contains beeswax and rich cacao butter, which soothe and moisturize thirsty skin. For post sun care, we love the Sun Dew Vitamin D Crème, which is a unique formula that delivers pure botanicals and nutrients to revitalize, hydrate and sustain your skin’s healthy glow. If you accidentally got a bit too much sun, this cream will instantly calm inflamed skin thanks to its aloe vera, rose hydrosol, seabuckthorn, and lavender oil.

Vanilla Mozi’s Bite Proof Body Cream

If you are spending a lot of time outdoors this summer like us then bug protection is a necessity. So many conventional options have toxic and chemical based ingredients that are bad for us and the environment, which is why we love the sustainable alternative – Vanilla Mozi. They have an entire bite proof range, but their Bite-Proof Body Cream is a product everyone should have on hand. Its innovative formula uses natural plant extracts that hide you from bugs like mosquitos, midgees, and more by making you smell like a flower they instinctively avoid, while also nourishing the skin. It works for the whole family and is totally safe to use on little ones too. Apply it as the last step in your routine after sunscreen and reapply as needed every two hours. Now you can spend as much time in nature without having to worry about any bites! All Vanilla Mozi products are Australian made, natural, organic, vegan, cruelty free, and you’ll never find anything like pesticides, palm oil, or parabens in any of their formulations. Available from Walmart Marketplace on online in USA now! www.vanillamozi.com

What makes Vanilla Mozi so special?

The thing we love most about Vanilla Mozi is that they avoid using a very particular chemical that is often used in insect repellent products. “The motivation behind Vanilla Mozi founder Lea-Anne Crawford developing her revolutionary Bite-Proof Body Cream nearly 20 years ago was that her children’s skin was reacting to the pesticides used in traditional repellents. DEET is one of the harshest and most commonly used ingredients and she felt this was causing the skin rashes yet there were no other options on the market. Out of necessity and a mother’s instinct that there had to be a better way to avoid bug bites, Vanilla Mozi Bite-Proof Body Cream was created. Today it has grown to become a much loved product protecting families all around the world with a unique biomimicry approach to Natural Bug Protection.” – Vanilla Mozi

Branch Basics products
Cora Hilts' cottage in Maine

@corahilts

“Our mission at Branch Basics is to help others toss the toxins and to create a healthy home. We never set out to sell soap. Our products have become the vehicle for our mission and we want everyone to experience the power of pure.”

Allison Evans, Co-Founder of Branch Basics

The founders of Branch Basics with their families

First of all, can you tell us a bit about the impetus to start Branch Basics? And how you first discovered that conventional cleaning products were not what you wanted to be using personally?

We started BB after Kelly and I overcame health issues (ranging from PCOS and pain to body odor and menstrual cramps!) by removing toxic chemicals from our diets and homes. Marilee, who is an environmental health consultant and trained in using food as medicine, explained to us that these products were keeping our bodies from healing. Once we felt the power of their removal, we were sold. And wanted to tell the world about how simple and transformational living a clean lifestyle can be!

What were some of the facts that you found out about ingredients in conventional cleaning products you feel are important for others to know about?

First of all, the ingredients aren’t legally required to be listed on cleaning products in the US, and even if they are, most are unregulated. Even the terms “natural” and “nontoxic” are able to be put on bottles that contain unnatural and toxic ingredients. Also, almost all ingredients that are fragrant contain endocrine disrupting chemicals, which can wreak havoc on our delicate hormonal system. Not to mention, the heavy disinfectants and sanitizers which contain ingredients that can kill good bacteria, disrupting our body’s microbiome and negatively impacting our immune system.

What are some of the physical symptoms a lot of us might experience from some of the chemicals found in the above?

Some of the most common physical symptoms many might experience when using conventional cleaning products with harsh chemicals are allergies, asthma, eczema and other skin irritation, migraines and headaches.

Using a Branch Basics kitchen cleaner

So what was the vision for Branch Basics as you went about creating your own alternative?

Our mission is to help others toss the toxins and to create a healthy home. We never set out to sell soap. Our products have become the vehicle for our mission and we want everyone to experience the power of pure.

What were some of the parameters you set for yourselves in terms of making the product as healthy and eco-friendly as possible?

Through Marilee’s learnings from working with chemically sensitive people for over 30 years, we had the knowledge of which ingredients were harmful to human health. This built a foundation to create products that are safe and eco-friendly.

Your concentrate is absolutely amazing – can you tell us more about what is in it?

The concentrate has only seven ingredients ( Purified Water, Decyl Glucoside, Organic Chamomile Flower Extract, Coco-Glucoside, Sodium Citrate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Phytate). They are plant and mineral based and biodegradable. We found that chamomile naturally preserves the product and the glucosides act as the surfactants to breakdown the dirt, grime and germs.

Branch Basics refill

“Sustainability to us at Branch Basics means going back to the basics, simplifying and reducing, reusing and recycling. We created our one concentrate mode not only to make cleaning simple, but with sustainability in mind. The one concentrate eliminates 13 single-use bottles.”

Allison Evans, Co-Founder of Branch Basics

Washing hands with a non toxic soap

Have you found that your natural cleaning methods are as effective as conventional?

Yes, and BETTER! People are always amazed at how well our non-toxic products work. The Concentrate cuts through grease and grime like nothing you have ever seen before. The Oxygen Boost is AMAZING for burnt pots and pans, as well as smelly workout clothes and baby spit ups.

We know you guys are Made Safe certified – can you tell us a bit about this and why it was so important to you to achieve?

Made Safe is the most stringent certification available. They vet each specific ingredient, not just from a general standpoint, but they investigate the actual manufacturer of every ingredient in a product according to toxicity, sustainability, bioaccumulation potential, persistence, and environmental concerns. We knew we wanted this certification to show the safety of our ingredients from a third-party source.

Branch Basics is made with plant and mineral based ingredients – what’s a favourite ingredient we may not know works for cleaning that you guys have chosen?

Chamomile! We did not realize that the chamomile would be such a powerful preservative. Also the sodium percarbonate in the Oxygen Boost is awesome at deodorizing, whitening and brightening!

Branch Basics laundry detergent

Can you tell us a bit about your “Toss The Toxins” course and why you created this? It sounds like something we all might need!

Our Toss The Toxins course is an accumulation of knowledge from Marilee’s 30+ years of experience working with the chemically sensitive. After Kelly and I spent the summer after college at Marilee’s to heal ourselves from our own health issues, we knew that the rest of the world needed to experience this power of pure as well. We made the course a 12+ video series walking you through the home to remove harmful chemicals. The course is set up so that you can #TossTheToxins at your own pace.

Finally, what does sustainability look like to you guys at Branch Basics?

Sustainability to us at Branch means going back to the basics, simplifying and reducing, reusing and recycling. We created our one concentrate mode not only to make cleaning simple, but with sustainability in mind. The one concentrate eliminates 13 single-use bottles. We also do not ship water in our other bottles to reduce our carbon footprint.

Skincare - The Face Planner

When it comes to skincare for your big day, it is best to start a routine a few months before. Firstly, so you can let the ingredients in the products work their magic, giving you radiant and clear skin for the big day. Secondly, you never know how your skin will react to skincare, it is therefore essential that you trial products out long before your wedding.

The Face Planner is the perfect brand for bridal skincare – they even have sets curated just for brides, allowing you to eliminate all the guesswork. It can be hard to find skincare that can work for many different skin types, but The Face Planner was developed alongside a dermatologist and formulated to be gentle enough for all skin types. All of their products are tested on sensitive skin, are cruelty-free and are full of amazing and sustainability sourced ingredients, many of which are from the brand home in Tuscany @thefrantoio.

The Ultimate Plan contains 6 products – The Cleanser, The Balancer, The Super Hydrator, The Protector, The Revitaliser, and The Brighenter. Together these products work to even out one’s skin tone, reduce fine lines, reduce inflammation, calm redness, and leave the skin looking radiant and pores visibly smaller. Our Head of Brand Partnerships (and our resident beauty expert) tried this set out for just a few weeks on her acne prone and incredibly sensitive skin and she can’t believe the results.

A few years ago, my husband and I purchased an old cottage close to where I had spent my childhood on the coast of Maine – we had wanted to invest in something outside of London where we were living at the time, and we knew the magic of old houses was something that spoke to both of us. This winter, we had saved enough to do a total restoration and wanted to make sure we did everything as sustainably as we could, as well as ensuring the house would stand for another 100 years or more.

We started out with a total take down of the interior and began with new insulation, heat pumps, windows and doors to create a much more efficient house. We chose wooden walls to keep everything as natural as possible, and finished them with Backdrops’s eco paint. It was then on to the decor which I knew I wanted to do as consciously as possible, with a lot of vintage, natural materials and of course, eco-friendly brands.

Below are the wonderful companies who have helped us make this cottage as sustainable in its decor as it now is in its bones!

AIZOME

AIZOME crafts luxuriously soft, healthy bedding, made entirely from plants. Using the magic of sound (ultrasound, that is) AIZOME has revived the lost art of plant dye for a modern, global market, infusing 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton with the pigment and properties of ancient medicinal herbs to create the naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic, skin-soothing sheets that are durable, colorfast, and free from all synthetics and toxins, from seed to sheet. Michel and his partner (and AIZOME co-founder) Misa first began to ask questions about the true nature of textile dye after Michel’s mother, bedridden with cancer, developed a painful reaction to the synthetic dyes in her bedsheets. Inspired by ancient Japanese craftsmanship and holistic wisdom, AIZOME’s patent-pending technology enables them to produce uncompromisingly healthy, consciously sustainable textile which has been recognized by the National Eczema Association as an innovative product bringing benefit and improving quality of life for individuals suffering from eczema and sensitive skin. But considering we spend 1/3 of our lives in bed and the textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world, these silky-soft sheets, free from petrochemicals, toxins, and allergens, offer deeply nourishing, worry-free sleep for anyone looking to support their health and lessen their impact.

PlantPaper

PlantPaper is a response to an industry and an hygienic practice in dire need of an update. When PlantPaper first began developing their products in 2016, they knew it wouldn’t be enough just to make a cleaner toilet paper; it had to be a better toilet paper—a toilet paper they themselves would want to use. A trade-up, not a trade-off. A toilet paper without compromise. PlantPaper’s toilet paper is made out of 3-ply, silky soft FSC-Certified bamboo. The best thing about bamboo is that the more bamboo that is harvested, the faster it grows. A bamboo grove may be able to produce as much 10x more usable fibre for paper than a forest of equivalent size. Bamboo stores up to 40% of its carbon underground, carbon that remains intact even when it’s harvested. This is why we love Bamboo and PlantPaper!

Marilee, Allison and Kelly started Branch Basics in 2012 after shared experiences of transforming ill-health through eating real foods and only using safe products. dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-scroll-image

@dulcedelana.mx

Our absolute favorite at Dulce de Lana is merino wool, as it is ideal for baby’s sensitive skin. With its fibers three times finer than any other type of wool, it is the softest and silkiest fabric on the market. Merino comes from a very special breed of Spanish sheep that grows healthily and freely, which guarantees abundant and high-quality wool. It has a natural elasticity that allows it to adapt to the body, always returning to its original shape. Its active fibers maintain the baby’s ideal body temperature in both hot and cold conditions. In addition, it is hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and has a protective layer against stains. And to top it all, it is biodegradable.

Discover the 9 following reasons why you, too, will chose merino wool as your favorite for babies:

dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-landscape-image

1. Regulates Temperature

During the first months, babies are still learning to regulate their temperature, and that is why it is very important to cover them with the appropriate material. Contrary to the general idea that wool is associated only with overcoats, merino wool is an excellent thermal regulator. It creates an ideal balance between the body and the environment. The fabric absorbs moisture and retains heat when temperatures are cold and humid. In hot weather, merino wool releases moisture, giving the body a feeling of coolness. In addition, it is a highly effective thermal insulator since, by retaining a large amount of air between its fibers, thermal conduction is difficult.

dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-landscape-image

2. Controls Humidity

It is one of the most breathable fabrics and will keep the baby warm and free from moisture. Merino wool absorbs moisture between and within its fibers, so it always feels dry. In fact, it can absorb 35% of its weight in water, without losing its ability to keep the baby warm.

dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-landscape-image

3. Improves Baby’s Sleep

Medical studies have confirmed that babies who sleep in merino wool have lower nighttime activity rates and deeper, more restful sleep. They calm down more quickly, cry less, sleep more, and gain weight faster.

dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-landscape-image

4. Reduces The Risk Of Allergies And Is Antibacterial

Merino wool works in total harmony with the protection mechanisms of the baby’s sensitive skin, not only because it is soft and breathable, but also because it is composed of keratin, the same protein that forms the outer protective layer of the epidermis and our hair. It also inhibits bacteria, thus minimizing unpleasant odors and allergies.

dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-landscape-image

5. Flame Resistant

One of the unique qualities of merino wool is its natural fire resistance, thanks to its structure of amino acids. Unlike synthetic fibers, such as acrylic, merino wool repels fire and is self-extinguishing.

dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-landscape-image

6. It Is Especially Comfortable And Soft

The wool fiber produced by merino sheep is significantly finer and lighter than other types of wool, so it feels very soft and silky. Its spongy fabric does not adhere to the skin and adapts perfectly to the baby’s movements.

dulce-de-lana-merino-wool-editorial-landscape-image

7. Easily Cared For

Although merino wool may appear fine and fragile to the naked eye, it is actually a very strong and durable fabric, since each fiber of merino wool is made up of elastic elements. In fact, they can be bent 20,000 times without breaking. Thanks to its antibacterial and antistatic properties, it repels dirt and regenerates when ventilated. It requires less cleaning than synthetics and is machine washable and dryable.

8. Protects Against UV Damage

Depending on the density of the fabric, merino wool has a natural sun protection factor of up to 50.

9. Helps Care For The Environment

Merino wool is 100% natural, renewable, and biodegradable. Thanks to worldwide quality certificates, the health and well-being of animals is guaranteed, and the processing of wool involves no toxic materials. When discarded, wool breaks down in the soil and slowly releases valuable nitrogen-based nutrients which act as a fertilizer.

Where to Stay:

Inness

We chose Inness because it’s such a beautiful place of course, but also follows a seasonal and local menu, has re-wilded a good amount of their land, use heat pumps for heating, have all natural materials in the rooms, lots of vintage furniture and encourages a real sense of nature throughout the space. When we woke up in our cottage we had deer outside and wildlife is encouraged around the grounds. It was truly a gorgeous place to stay and a very thoughtful experience!

Koraru Swimsuit

Created with circularity as its main aspiration and a love of the ocean in its soul, Koraru is the Japanese pronunciation of the English word ‘coral’, home to one of the world’s most treasured, beautiful, but threatened ecosystems. Koraru’s swimwear is made with ECONYL® regenerated yarn from nylon waste, and our packaging materials are created with a range of new recyclable materials, each with its own amazing story.

Advene bag

Founded by Zi Xuan and Yijia Wang, Advene is a New York City-based accessories brand making subtle, functional bags that are thoughtfully constructed and responsibly made – advocating for best-in-class materials and craftsmanship above all else. Advene comes from the term ‘advenience’ meaning ‘art that stirs something inside of you’. It took a year for the New York-based co-creators to develop the style, one which is the result of six different prototype iterations and the consequence of multiple conversations with fabric tanneries, textile labs and hemp farms. The style has conscious design stitched into every seam.
